MUSICAL MISCELLANY
At the Belgian Brewer
FUND RAISER FOR
GROVE COTTAGE
|
Hello Acoustic Clubbers As 2025
closed we were delighted to finish the year with a musical miscellany at the
Belgian Brewer. It has become a
tradition that we finish the year with a fund raiser for local charities of
various type. This year we were delighted to support The Grove Cottage. The Grove Cottage are a Mencap Charity in Bishops
Stortford. They are lovely people doing a tremendous job and a very worthy
cause. |
|
|
|
|
|
Opening the evening
Host and MC BILL TARRAN found his usual batch of songs from the
distant past, not so long ago and a fairly new one as well We welcomed back
song writer and performer extraordinaire TRINA READE was delight.
Trina as ever gave us some wonderful self-penned songs as well as a couple of
covers which she performs so beautifully. |
|
|
For the first of
our bands was Bishops Stortford’s favourite Boy Band BLUES INC.
Acoustic Club founder Drew Bonnington as well as Andy (vocals), Graeme (bass)
Martin (lead guitar) and Nina (drums) Blues Inc have a varied and wonderful
repertoire included all sorts of genres as well as some cracking blues. It is
always a pleasure to welcome them back as one of the most solid and
delightful musical experiences you can have. |
|
|
Closing the evening
and from Nashville to the River Stort, BIG DOOR PRIZE played songs of
love, loss, heartbreak and chip shops. There was rocking and rolling,
a dance, and a goosebump or two. This band are rarely seen together in public
and there is a good reason for that, logistically it is difficult getting 5
people together. It is a logistical nightmare but when they do perform
together Big Door Prize did not disappoint. It is fair to say that even the
guest appearance by Twig and Annabelle’s dog did not detract from a fantastic
performance. |
|
|
It was a wonderful
end to the evening and when Geoff had totalled up the money that was so
generously given into the collection, the Grand Total of £650 will be donated
to Grove House. MANY THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO DONATED SO
GENEROUSLY. |

THURSDAY 27th NOVEMBER 2025
WINTER CONCERT
THE EXILE CLUB
|
Hello Acoustic Clubbers There
can be few better ways of finish the year at the South Mill Arts Centre than
the wonderful Winter Concert we experienced last time with the incredible
Exile Club. As a
band there are few to equal their talent and their exuberance is infectious,
such that the whole audience feels that they are an essential part of the
experience. Yes, it is a fact that The Exile Club have performed for us
several times but their performance remains a new experience every time they
play. They bring new songs as well as some much loved favourites. |
|
|
|
|
||
|
The line up for the band
remains the same, a solid mixture of individual talent and collective
performance. There are no weak links at any point, being five well-travelled
and experienced musicians: Joe Hazell (Vocals/Lead Guitar), Abbie Middleton
(Lead Vocals), Neil Findlay (Drums), Daisy Pepper (Bass Guitar) and Tommy
Lednor (keyboard) and together they make compelling music. Playing to a record
number in the audience they prove again and again that they are enormously
talented. It would be fair to say that the guiding light is Joe who shapes
and crafts the forward momentum, but Abi is the natural cheer leader who
manages to cajole the audience into mass participation whilst the rhythm
section of Daisy, Neil and Tommy lay down that essential beat and provide the
solid basis that lets Abi and Joe thrive. At the end of their
double headline set, the highly appreciative audience was left with magic
memories and eagerly buying up copies of the Exile Clubs debut CD. Just a
brilliant way to finish our year at the South Mill Arts Centre. |

Our two supporting
acts were outstanding
Hanako Ward gave us two songs that re-enforces her position as one
of the brightest guitarist singers we have seen for many years. The Pulse defy the fact that they are a young band.
Originating from the Burnt Mill Academy in Harlow, they played a strong a
mixture of rock classics and original material. All sprinkled with first
class musicianship that defies their young years! Suffice to say that
both The Pulse and Hanako have been approached to perform at the Bandstand
Acoustic Weekend in August 2026 |
||
|
Grateful thanks
must go to Alex and all the others who have been in charge of the Sound Desk
over the year for their sterling work on the Sound Desk and much appreciation
to all the staff and volunteers who go to make the SMA such a wonderful
welcoming venue. |

FUND RAISING EVENING
St Elizabeth Centre at Much Hadham
AT THE BELGIAN BREWER
6 Acts 4 Songs
|
Hello Acoustic Clubbers Last
time at the Belgian Brewer we were delighted to feature 6 wonderful acts all
of whom have graced the stage at the Acoustic Club over the years. As an
added bonus, we were able to raise £300 for St Elizabeths Centre in Much
Hadham so many thanks to all who contributed to this wonderful Charity. Our
featured 6 Acts gave us the full range of their talent for which we were all
hugely entertained. |
|
Abela
Brothers The Abela Brothers
are a duo who have spent many years writing and developing their own music.
They are writers of incredible music that has been commissioned for shows,
revues and West End spectacular musical evenings. Their set was a Masterclass
of writing as their original songs are superb. Heartfelt and memorable,
delivered in their unique style was a cracking opening to the evening. |
|
|
|
Dan Titus Dan Titus is an
original performer. His songs are enormously entertaining as well as
meaningful and can be a bit of a wakeup call to the audience. Dan is always a
player we love to hear and is one of those multi-talented players who are
always welcome at the Club. Last time he gave us a preview of his recently
released EP as well the first performance of a new song. A cracking set from
a cracking player. |
|
Tom
Ryder There are few
things that are certain in life. One of these is that if we need help at the
Club, Tom Ryder will always be there for us, sometimes at very short notice.
This was the case last time and at the drop of a hat, Tom gave us a set of
music that was just beautiful. He is an all-around talent that encompasses
writing, singing and playing guitar. He gave us originals and a cover that
re-enforces his position as a tremendous performer. |
|
|
|
riverrats riverrats gave us a
superb set of original, stomping and hard hitting songs. Their music was
contemporary, unfussy and superb. Their unembellished sound gave us
originality and ability, they have lots and lots of both to spare. A
tremendous live act. Elliot
Porter A couple of weeks
ago Elliot launched his latest musical offering “I choose the Moon” an
EP of 6 wonderful tracks of new music. Elliot gave us a preview with 4 songs
taken from the EP with, as an added treat, backing vocals from his partner
Jess. Together they brought a refreshing view of the “Porter World” which
was, as ever, full of unique music perfectly delivered. |
|
|
|
Cut the Mustard Defying
compartmentalisation Dave and Martin gave us a wide ranging and eclectic set
featuring blues and ragtime. Dave has a sensational voice as well as
providing accompaniment with various percussion instruments and plays a fine
blues harp. Martin is a master guitar player who specialises in a
finger-picking style based on the claw hammer style but very definitely his
own and proved he is also a fine vocalist to boot. Together they make a
complete sound that held the audience spellbound. They were fantastic closing
to the highly entertaining and cracking evening of great music. Many thanks to our
6 acts as they gave us a wonderful evening of live music. Thanks to Nik and
his staff at the Belgian Brewer for their hospitality and of course their
wonderful beer and food. |
THURSDAY 30th OCTOBER 2025
HEADLINE SHOWCASE
ONE AFTER 909
and
The Stortford Young Players
|
Hello Acoustic Clubbers Last
time we were delighted to welcomed not only the irrepressible One After 909 but also the Stortford Young Players. |
|
|
ONE AFTER 909 Colin and James
Frid are a father and son duo who combine the very best of 1960’s and 70’s
land mark songs with ventures into highly listenable modern songs. Two
guitars and two voices revel in both their differences and their
similarities. |
|
|
|
|
|
Colin and James are
stylists who bring their world to life. They blend together like the
legendary family groups of the past and will fully reawaken your love for
those classics they love as well as their new music that is unique. |
|
|
THE STORTFORD YOUNG
PLAYERS This evening was
special because we had some really great music from the young players from
around Bishops Stortford. Our players included many from the much admired
Saffron Walden based Garden Youth Music Project but also other young
players looking for opportunity to play and an audience willing to listen to
them. We were delighted
to welcome these young talented performers this evening and listened in awe
at their talent. Our players were PAUL featuring Leila Dawn, Alice
Fernall, Huey Levy, Joe Barker &
Mansell Partridge.
Layla Mone with Mansel Partridge & Huey Levy, Ronnie Scott &
Will Hobbs
Elliot Lavergne William Chandler
Jasper Bokay. Just about as far
reaching an evening as we have seen for quite a while. Many have played
before and most played at the Acoustic Bash in the Summer where they all
impressed enormously so the great music was delightfully expected from the
youngsters. At this point I
have to apologies to James as Colin and I conspired to get him to play his
party piece -1952 Vincent Black Lightning - as a brilliant encore to the One
After 909 set. Just a fantastic way to finish a brilliant evening of music.
Sorry James but it was worth it!! |
|
|
Grateful thanks to
Alex for his sterling work on the Sound Desk and much appreciation to all the
staff and volunteers who go to make the SMA such a wonderful welcoming venue. |
|
THURSDAY 23rd OCTOBER 2025
CONCERT SHOWCASE
HUNTER MUSKETT
|
Hello
Acoustic Clubbers What a
brilliant we had last time with the wonderful Hunter Muskett performing a
full CONCERT SHOWCASE |
|
|
Hunter Muskett are,
without a doubt, a fantastic live act who cast a spell over every audience
they play for. Terry, Doug and Roger are individually brilliant musicians,
but it is when they bring their unique sound together that they reach levels
of performance that are quite frankly brilliant. All three are
accomplished song writers and once you couple that with outstanding
musicianship the foundations of their performance is set. |
|
|
|
|
|
Their choice of
music was outstanding, playing for nearly 90 minutes and with songs that come
from their latest album all the way back to their first in the late 1960’s.
Such is the esteem that they both were and are held in, not just by audiences
but also players and other bands, that they were able to pay tribute to the
very recently departed master of the bass, Danny Thompson, who guested on
their first album. Terry’s vocals are
clear and reflect his writing. Doug is still one of the finest lead
guitarists around but moves easily to the acoustic with such ease and
enhances the vocals on his songs so well. Roger is one of the most attuned
bassists and mandolin players around but that is not his only talent; he
completes the vocals with the occasional lead vocal spot. They played for 90
minutes and gave the absolute full range of Hunter Muskett and we, as an
eager and spell bound audience, loved every song. `` Just a superb
Concert Showcase. |
|
|
Our two supporting
players - Bill Tarran and Mike Norman - both gave us 4 songs,
Mike with his originals and a wonderful version of the Paul Simon Classic Only
Living Boy in New York and Bill completed the evenings music with a tribute
to the much lamented and missed Colin Scot who passed 25 years ago this
month. |
|
|
Although it is no
surprise to us at the Acoustic Club, Terry did give grateful thanks to Alex
for his sterling work on the Sound Desk and appreciation to all the staff and
volunteers who go to make the SMA such a wonderful welcoming venue |
|
THURSDAY 16th OCTOBER 2025
HEADLINE SHOWCASE
ELIZABETH & JAMESON
|
It was a real
pleasure to welcome Elizabeth & Jameson back to the Acoustic Club last
time. There are few groups who work as hard (their trip to us was preceded by
night in Scotland and a 400+ mile trip to be with us) as they are in the
middle of a Tour to promote their latest album. This, however,
proves to everyone, especially those who came to concert evening, what a
special duo they are. Their music is infectious, their words compelling and
their performance is magnificent. |
|
|
|
Hannah and Griff
have a wonderful synergy that is obvious for all to see. They have that
innate ability to finish each other’s sentences. However, Griff, as the
creative driving force, writes in obvious themes. Their current album is a
retrospect of his childhood home in South Wales and has endearing melodies
and hard-hitting lyrics. Hannah brings her soaring vocals and haunting violin
to both compliment and enhance the songs. Their new album
“Way out West” is a retrospective coated in those romantic memories of youth
enhanced by Hannahs guiding hand. It introduces us to Griff’s earliest
influences as well as introduces us all to a wonderful phrase “Ych A Fii” –
wonderful phrase fit for all occasions of stress. |
|
Elizabeth &
Jameson were supported by Bill Tarran, Nigel Yates, Paul Booth, John and
Danny McCarthy and new to us Mickey Niner. Many thanks to Alex
for his sterling work on the Sound Desk and our appreciation to all the staff
and volunteers who go to make the SMA such a wonderful welcoming venue |
6 ACTS
– 4 SONGS
|
Hello Acoustic Clubbers There is a reason why we
hold 6 Act evenings and last time we had the perfect reason. The quality and
perfection of the performances our players deliver. So aptly summed up by
Terry Hiscock, we had the pleasure of 24 songs from 6 players, all in
differing genres but all of a very high quality. |
|
|
TERRY HISCOCK Terry Hiscock is a seasoned professional player as well
as a gifted songwriter and performer. Closing the evening, Terry engaged the
audience with four original songs and a level of banter that only comes with
being comfortable with his surroundings and the audience. He always bring a level of performance that is hard to
better as he has spent the last many years entertaining and entrancing
audiences across the world. The best news is that Terry will be back with Doug and
Roger as part of Hunter Muskett later in the month. |
|
|
CLARK & JOHNSON Tony and Karen always bring their best game to the
Acoustic Club stage and last time was no different. Karens vocals are marked
by the clarity of her voice and Tony provides such a brilliant accompaniment
as well as the perfect backing vocals which are the foil for Karens lead.
Just a cracking set!! |
|
|
|
|
ALICE WALKER Alice is a one off. Her songs are personal, often
filled with regret, sometime filled with hope but always a delight to listen
to. Self-deprecating almost to a fault, Alice’s whole sound
scape is based on a firm foundation of great music and top full with her
emotional lyrics that often break your heart with their intensity. Alice remains a firm favourite who we do not see often
enough. Hopefully it will not be too long before we see her again |
|
|
PETER CROSSLEY Peter is a Yorkshire exile who is now part of the
fabric of the vibrant Hertford Music scene and it is always a delight when we
can hear him. A masterful songwriter who reflects on his life and his
experiences, both of which are well worth the listen, but his stage
performance is one of bringing the audience with him. Every one who hears him
cannot but be moved by his music and performance. |
|
|
|
|
Why Not? Why Not are another Hertford based duo of high repute.
Unfortunately, our booked act, the Paul Booth Trio, was unable to perform as
Paul was unwell (get well soon Paul) but his absence was covered by Sue and
Verna who are terrific interpreters of songs from far and wide. Close
harmonies and a superb backing 12 string guitar or the watch word of their
performance, and they really gave us a fantastic opening to the evening. |
|
|
DAN FRASER Making his debut performance in a 4 song night Dan
moved from his covers-based performance to entertain us not only with a
brand-new guitar but also 4 original songs. As accomplished as covers player he is (and he is) his
original music was fantastic. He has a cracking style of intricate, yet
pleasing guitar playing and completes the experience with down right cracking
songs. Many thanks |
. |
|
|
Finally, we must say thanks to CHARLIE for his
incredible work on the sound desk with the sliders and knobs. What fantastic
sound he creates. Also, many thanks to all the staff and volunteers who go to
make the SMA such a wonderful welcoming venue. |

THURSDAY 18th SEPTEMBER 2025
DOUBLE HEADLINE SHOWCASE
featuring
ROME
&
VIC LENNARD
|
Hello
Acoustic Clubbers Last
time we returned with a a fantastic Double Headline Showcase featuring ROME
and Vic Lennard. |
|
One of the real tricks
of putting a Double Headline Showcase is to find two acts that complement
each other perfectly. Last time we had 2 Acts that not only complemented but
enhanced each other Vic Lennard is a regular visitor to the Club, he returns because
he is very good at what he does. A great performer and song writer but adds a
presence on stage that is impossible not to enjoy. His songs are delightful. |
|
|
|
Vic has that
ability to make every set an occasion and he was at the very top of his game
last time. Some wonderful songs, heartfelt to whimsical ditties and
reflection all coalesce into a cracking set. Many thanks Romy Gensale is a natural communicator. She has the all around
attributes that enhance her reputation. She composes beautiful melodies and
her lyrics are pleasing. However, it is the meaning and her motivation that
make you think and understand |
|
|
|
Her band absolutely
compliments her songs by providing that essential bedrock upon which all
great performances are founded. With Vic Lennard on guitar, Chris Ross on
bass and Andy Barlow on percussion they make an exceptional fulfilment to
Romy’s music. A cracking set of
Original Gensale Music that was just about as good as it gets. Many thanks to
the Band but mostly Romy for her inspiration and peerless writing. We were supported
by Bill Tarran, Kevin Johnson, Paul Tully and James Farrington all of
whom really stepped up to the mark with a highly eclectic choice of songs
completing a cracking evening of live music. |
|
Finally, we must
say thanks to Jayden for his incredible work on the sound desk and the
sliders and knobs. What fantastic sound he helps create. Also, many thanks to
all the staff and volunteers who go to make the SMA such a wonderful
welcoming venue. |
THURSDAY 4th SEPTEMBER 2025
6 ACTS – 4 SONGS
|
Hello
Acoustic Clubbers Last
time we returned with a wonderful collection of 6 acts who each performed 4
songs. |
|
|
COLIN FRID It does not really
matter where or when Colin Frid plays. He gives his very best at all times
and last time was no different. He uses his ablility and experience to chose
the right songs from his encyclopaedic knowledge of what are some of the best
around. He enthralled us and his not inconsiderable fan club with four
wonderful tunes. Thanks Colin. |
|
ARCADIA We have seen
Arcadia before and they really have a new take on their music. Sue sings and
Richard plays the guitar. They took us back
to a less complicated era where fine songs and close harmony ruled the stage;
a journey back to a gentler time. |
|
|
|
EXAGGERATORS The Exaggerators are
a “One Off”, they perform their original songs with a verve and dedication
that is quite astounding. The music demands your attention and if you give
them 100% they will reward you with intricacies in songwriting and melody
construction that make everything sound familiar but it is the words that
knock you back and then out. Their music is presented in a slightly punky way
and Bill and William prod and poke your memories and imagination in equal
measure. Just a cracking set! |
|
SOUTH OF POLARIS Dani and Saul
brought their harmonies and music to the Club for a much anticipated return
to the Club. They were truly
excellent. 4 very different original songs. Danii has a superb voice and is
an accomplished violinist, while Saul is a fine guitarist with a Flamenco
flavour (amongst others). A superb
performance. |
|
|
|
MICHAEL SEDGWICK Local product Michael
grew up playing mainly electric guitar around Bishops Stortford and London.
After some time away to have a family, he’s now making up for lost time
playing a range of acoustic covers and originals. His influences define his
performance and he is both a wonderful interpreter of others music as well as
giving a glimpse of his own. Great to see him again and we all look forward
to the next time. |
|
SKY WEST TRIO Sky West is more of
a concept that consists of a varying amount of members. We were treated to a stripped-down
set from three members Mark Gamon, Brian Harvey and Dave Oxley. Performing with a
verve and gusto that stands as a testament to their prodigious musical talent
their originality shone through with a cracking set setting the scene for a
fantastic evening of music as it should be performed. Original and meaningful. |
. |
|
Finally, we must
say thanks to Alex for his incredible work on the sound desk and the
sliders and knobs. What fantastic sound he helps create. Also, many thanks to
all the staff and volunteers who go to make the SMA such a wonderful
welcoming venue. |
|
DOUBLE
HEADLINE SHOWCASE
featuring
THE
PAUL BOOTH TRIO
&
THE
BLUES AMIGOS
featuring
Mike Happnin Boy,
Grant
Howard and Louis Dolby
|
Hello Acoustic Clubbers Oh What a Night!! How can you explain the evening we
had last time. With a Double Headline featuring The Paul Booth Trio in
all its splendour and the incomparable Blues Amigos, what more could
you ask for? Well with three fantastic supporting players as well,
the evening was complete. |
|
THE PAUL BOOTH TRIO Despite his many appearances in various guises and
combinations over the years, Paul remains a firm favourite with the Acoustic
Club for 1 very good reason - the quality of his music. If you add the
scintillating bass of Si and the wonderous backing vocals of Verna as well as
her often ventures into percussion, you have a winner of a set. |
|
|
|
Pauls songwriting remains the basis of their
performance. He moves from topic and subject with a grace that is understated
but highly effective. His songs mean a lot to him and with the vocal delivery
and musical backing they become instant favourites. The Trio remains a musical high point. They play with
conviction and ease, whilst never forgetting that they have a purpose and
meaning that whilst obvious never the less remains as a testament to the song
writer. Many thanks for a glorious set of stunning songs and
interaction. THE BLUES AMIGOS feature Mike
Happninboy, Grant Howard and Louis Dolby in a line up that dominates both the
stage and the audience in equal measure. However, it is great to see Mike back after his recent
problems with his eye but trust me, no small matter of being half blinded is
going to stop the progress of such a brilliant combo. |
|
|
|
As a force of nature Mike is one of those players who
grabs attention by the scruff of the neck and then bends it to his will. A
rockin’ and rollin’ blues phenomenon that really commits to any performance.
You add Grant Howard with his distinctive blues harp and all underpinned by
Louis Doly’s fantastic percussion you have all the necessary ingredients for
an enthralling set. What we got from the Blues Amigos was what was
promised. A non-stop wander through hard core blues as well as a few
originals that got the feet tapping and the hands clapping from the whole
audience. As ever, a super set of unambiguous joy that finished all too soon. |
|
Many thanks go to our supporting players, all of whom
were stars of our Young Players Nights in the past and they have now
progressed to the big stage where they stand comparison with any player. |
|
|
|
Many thanks to Hanako Ward for the beautiful
guitar work and songs, Eleanor Hewins on a vacation back from Uni
singing songs of lost love and hope and Conor Andrews another escapee
from Uni who is developing into a really strong performer and writer. As
three local players they set the benchmark for our other young players to
aspire to. |
|
Finally, we must say thanks to Charlie for his
incredible work on the sound desk and the sliders and knobs. What fantastic
sound he helps create. Also, many thanks to all the staff and volunteers who
go to make the SMA such a wonderful welcoming venue. |
THURSDAY 7th AUGUST 2025
SIX ACTS – 4 SONGS
|
Hello Acoustic Clubbers Last
time we had a stunning Six Acts
assembled to give a truly genre expanding experience. |
|
|
Making their debut
at the Acoustic Club Pointy Finger gave us a wonderful
set with each of the four members taking centre stage in leading a song each.
They proved to be a highly enjoyable mixture of folk-enthused modern music
tinged with a touch of Americana. A great way to open the evening and we look
forward to their next visit. |
|
Phil Ericson was making a return
visit to the club after quite a few years. He remains a highly talented and
fantastic songwriter. His songs vary from subject to subject and can evoke
memories of yesteryear as well as moments closer to today. A brilliant set
that had the audience very much on his side and in the palm of his hands. |
|
|
|
Jonny Brewer is a bit of an enigma. He did the first couple of
songs on his guitar proving what a great songwriter and performer he is, but
in the twinkling of an eye, he moved seamlessly onto the piano and showed
what a great depth of musical talent he has. His songs are
hard-hitting as well as easy to listen to. He is an expressive pianist as
well as a compelling vocalist which really impresses. Just a really great
set. |
|
Mark Dellar is a songwriter of
the old school. He writes what he sees as well as what he imagines. If you
add that to an expressive voice and great guitar work you have a really great
performer. Mark has played a couple of times, but that does not diminish his talent and ability. He leads an audience where it wants to be, just gently nudging them into that space of appreciation. A smashing set from a great player who we look forward to seeing again – soon. |
|
|
|
Bill Tarran does not often get
called upon during 6 x 4 nights, such is the popularity of the format, but
with one player being unexpectedly called into work, he filled the spot
created. As ever, he gave us songs from his rather large repertoire especially from the early days of “The Singer Songwriter”. However he did manage a couple that were not 50 years old and written by local songwriters, both given his own personal touch. |
|
Tom Ryder is one of our most
welcome of visitors. He has been playing since the Club was founded and in
the intervening years he has developed into a superb performer as well as a
compelling songwriter. Yet again, he closed the show with some fantastic songs proving that he is someone who should have been spotted years ago for much bigger and better things. |
|
|
Thanks must be
given to the Staff at the SMAC for their help and assistance in getting
everyone seated and kept comfortably supplied with sufficient liquid
refreshments throughout the evening. |
|
THURSDAY 24th JULY 2025
DOUBLE HEADLINE SHOWCASE
Featuring
TENNESSEE TWIN
&
SANDY and DENISE McLELLAND
|
Hello Acoustic Clubbers Last
time we had a stunning
"Double Headliner" night for our supporters with half hour sets
from both TENNESSEE TWIN and SANDY and DENISE McLELLAND |
|
|
|
TENNESSEE TWIN Victoria and Geoff have
been long time supporters of the Club and we are always very happy to see
them return to the Acoustic Club. They are a highly talented and inventive
songwriting combo that produces songs that connects them on a personal level
and captivates audiences around the world. Their songs span
the UK Country and Americana world and they are driven by shared interests,
inspiration, determination, and a love of performance & storytelling
through music. This time they gave
us a delightful mixture of new and old songs from their considerable
repertoire with each song having a special place in their musical journey and
every song has a well crafted meaning. Many thanks to
Tennessee Twin for a truly spectacular set.
|
|
SANDY and DENISE McLELLAND When you book Sandy
for a set, if you are lucky his wife Denise will join him for a few songs. If
you are blessed, Denise is part of the whole set. We were well blessed last
time as Denise was a huge part of the musical performance and Sandy, as the
master of country blues, rock and folk. He is a marvellous singer/songwriter
as his songs are often full and vibrant highly entertaining half hour set. As a duo, they both
capable performers who are comfortable across many, diverse, musical styles,
always with a highly personal core. Their set was a kaleidoscope of original
music, drawn from a lifetime of musical excellence and passed far too
quickly. Many thanks to you both for such wonderful music. We had 5
support performers who gave us a great and diverse introduction to the
evening with 2 songs from Bill
Tarran (Host and MC), Kevin
Johnson, Max Lavergne, Dan Fraser and Stuart Nicholson. |
|
Thanks must be
given to the Staff at the SMAC for their help and assistance in getting
everyone seated and kept comfortably supplied with sufficient liquid
refreshments throughout the evening. |
THURSDAY 10th JULY 2025
Six Acts - Four Songs
|
Hello Acoustic Clubbers Last
time we had a wonderful mixture of acts with 6 super acts each playing an
extended 4 song set. |
|
|
|
TRINA READ Trina Read returned with some amazing
new songs, this time accompanied by her wonderfully sympathetic guitar. Trina
has developed into not only a wonderful performer but also her development as
a song writer is where she moves into spectacular. Her songs are poignant and
reflect her writers skill as well as being able to vocalise personal
experience. |
|
RICHARD STUBBS Stubsie
is a musical phenomenon as he produces a wealth of original material that is
pleasing on the ear as well as making you think. As ever
he entranced the audience with his thought process in writing and makes the
audience fell part of the process. |
|
|
|
KELLY AND WOOLEY There
are few duos that are as highly respected as Kelly and Woolley Matt and
Gary are two highly gifted players who combine to make wonderful music. They
are true originals and have produced music that lifts the heart. They can
easily slip between traditional folk music to cajon and zydeco roots music in
the blink of an eye. Just a brilliant set from two highly accomplished
musicians. |
|
CRAYON ANGELS Crayon
Angels are by their own admission are not as active on the music scene as
they once were, but that does not mean that they are any less impressive.
They have a wonderful knack of being able to draw the audience into their
special world with ease Many thanks to a band we are always delighted to hear
and see. |
|
|
|
MIKE NORMAN Making
his debut at the Acoustic Club Mike gave us a great set of music that really
suited his style and talent. His original songs strike home and his vocals
were a real treat. Looking forward to the next time. |
|
COLIN FRID Colin is Mr
Reliable. He reliably performs and entertains every time. His vast repertoire
means he always has a song to share that we may have forgotten or song that
evokes memories from both a long time ago or just last week. As ever a
smashing set from a smashing performer. |
|
|
Thanks must be
given to the Staff at the SMAC for their help and assistance in getting
everyone seated and kept comfortably supplied with sufficient liquid
refreshments throughout the evening. |

THURSDAY 26th JUNE 2025
Double Headline Showcase
featuring
Jim Watts
and
JONO
|
We try to find diverse acts when we book two Headliners
and we could not have picked two acts from different ends of a similar
musical scale as Jim Watts and Jono. |
|
|
|
Jim Watts has a real talent
for finger picking blues but in truth his wide repertoire from the well-known
to the hidden gem really came to the fore last time. He revels in his
finger-picking style and his repertoire is supported not only by his unfussy
but compelling delivery but also by his warm and deeply rich vocals. He has a
brilliant self-effacing way of both introducing himself to the Audience and
endearing himself to it so effectively that the audience becomes “his” in
very short order. Jim has been around the music scene for many years and brought
the full experience and talent honed over the years to every song. Many thanks to Jim for a fascinating and compelling
set. |
|
|
|
JONO are “almost a
legend” in and around Stortford and that is due entirely to not only their
undoubted talent but their dedication to their style which is always welcomed
by audiences everywhere. They always have the talent to deliver a fantastic
and highly personalised arrangements of often played songs, such that they
song becomes a signature of their own. They opened with a song that is rarely attempted by
anyone other than the Original Artist or specialised tribute bands ‘Time’ by
Pink Floyd. Such is their quality and brilliance it took the whole audience
back to the heyday of prog rock. Once you start on a real high, it is hard to maintain
it, but they did just that and continued in such a strong vein that before
you knew it, their set was over with both their reputation enhanced and the
audience satisfied. Just a brilliant set from a Band we love to call our
friends and supporters of the club. Many thanks Mike, Kris, Ed and Cormac. |
|
Our 5 supporting artists featuring Bill Tarran
Host and M/C, Richard Holder, Michael Sedgwick, Richard Pink and Jonny
Brewer all of whom delivered great and professional sets and we look
forward to the next time |
|
Without doubt, the whole evening would not have been
the same without our brilliant in-house Sound Techs Charlie and Alex. Great
job guys and many thanks from both the Artists and the Audience. Thanks also must be given to the Staff at the SMAC for
their help and assistance in getting everyone seated and kept comfortably
supplied with sufficient liquid refreshments throughout the evening. |
THURSDAY 12th JUNE 2025
6 Acts – 4 Songs
|
Hello Acoustic Clubbers Last
time we were entranced we were delighted to welcome 6 Acts to the Acoustic
Club with Pat Crilly as Host. It is so great to welcome two new to us acts –
The Exaggerators and South of Polaris |
|
|
|
Pat Crilly with Paul Hilder Pat was
Host and MC for the evening; a role he has done for us many times with
distinction. This
time, he was joined by Paul and not only do they regularly play together they
have done so for many years. Paul brings his incredible guitarwork to Pat’s
songs as well as bringing lead guitar. |
|
Pass the Buch Chris
and Richard have a unique sound and have a great talent for finding rarely
heard songs. Always willing to try something new, we were treated to two
acapella songs from this unique duo as well as well performed songs on two
guitars. |
|
|
|
Why Not Sue and Verna are building
a strong
reputation for delivering great music. It is not rare to hear two voices and
guitar, but Why Not seemed to have cornered the market in close harmony
original music. Their new album is a joy to hear. |
|
Martin Day As a
songwriter Martin falls into the category of prolific. His songs are inspired
by his life and his imagination in equal measure. He produces songs for every
occasion and as ever he gave us a set that lingers long in the memory. |
|
|
|
The Exaggerators When you
bring two members of a band to play a differing repertoire from their normal
fare, it can go one of several ways. Fortunately, Bill and William are such
experienced and talented musicians, the way it went was brilliant. The Exaggerators gave us 4 originals, all quirky, tongue in
cheek, humorous songs all presented in a slightly punky way. Just a
lovely entertaining set. |
|
South of Polaris Dani and Saul brought
their harmonies and music to the Club for the first time. South of Polaris
were truly excellent. 4 very different original songs. Danii has a superb
voice and is an accomplished violinist, while Saul is a good guitarist with a
Flamenco flavour (amongst others). Original music with
superb performance we hope to see them again soon. |
|
|
Thanks must be
given to the Staff at the SMAC for their help and assistance in getting
everyone seated and kept comfortably supplied with sufficient liquid
refreshments throughout the evening. |
THURSDAY 29th May 2025
THURSDAYS BAND
and the
Stortford Young Players
|
Hello Acoustic Clubbers Last
time was a really special night. Not only was our Headline Showcase the
brilliant Thursdays Band but ably supported by our Young Players. We had a
truly glorious evening of mostly original music. |
|
|
|
THURSDAY'S BAND at the very
recent Oakfest 2025. Thursday’s Band are
a four piece band interlocks so many styles influences and downright great
music it is an embarrassment of pleasure. They performed mainly original
music that come from their collective heart and is so varied that it often
defies description. Their individual and collective musicianship is a
phantasmagorical collection of lifelong musical excellence and their
performance was one of the strongest we have seen for ages. Sometimes they
are personal; sometimes they tell tall tales; sometimes they break out into
wistful laments and exuberant tunes but all of the time spent on stage is
filled with their magnificent music. Many thanks for a wonderful headline
set. In support, we had
two song Floor spots from our Young Players.Three times a year we open the
stage to encourage the young players in our locality – and beyond. Our
objective is to give a professional space to players starting on their
individual journey. This has proven to be a wonderful experience for so many
players who return time after time to share their original music as well as
developed covers that they choose to perform. We have seen so many grow from
small hesitant starts into seasoned performers who are given the confidence a
professional stage that allows them to think big – and bigger. So in no
particular order grateful thanks and keep on playing to Black Velvet, Alessandra
Freeston, Danny McCarthy, Eva Knight, Archie Eastlake, Jasper Bokay and Leila
Daw, Alice Fernal and Huey. |
|
Finally, last time
we said good bye to someone who over the past months, has helped us produce
some of the finest sound around. Our Soundman Ale is returning to Seville
after being one of the SMAC professional sound technicians. Quite frankly we
do not give enough credit or often enough to that elite band of people who
have but one aim in life – to make the players and performers sound the very
best that they can be. It is true that SMAC has a fantastic Sound System but
it takes real skill to understand and develop that essential ‘feel’ for the
music performed. Ale has been a
special part of our evenings over the past few months and we all say “Muchas gracias, Ale,
por tu arduo trabajo. Te deseamos mucha suerte en el futuro. Tus próximas
ganancias son nuestras pérdidas”. |
THURSDAY 15th MAY 2025
CONCERT SPECIAL
DAVE SUTHERLAND
|
Hello Acoustic Clubbers Last
time we were delighted to welcome back to the Acoustic Club Dave Sutherland
for our Spring Concert. |
|
|
|
Dave is,
without doubt, one of the top Americana performers in the UK and he has the
awards to cement his reputation. Male Americana Performer of the Year, Album
of the Year and Single of the Year as well as many top 3 and Top of the
Charts singles. He has a long and wonderful history of performing at the
Acoustic Club extending over 20 years and a reputation that stands comparison
with any performer in the UK. |
|
At our
concert, Dave performed two sets, initially planned as two 40 minute sets,
but it rapidly expanded into very nearly 2 hours of the finest South East
London Americana available. A packed audience was made up of dedicated fans,
people who have seen or heard Dave before and a whole group of new fans who
had not been previously exposed to the “Sutherland Effect” before. As a
performer he remains a highly engaging, bringing the audience into his world
of music with introductions to each song, enhancing the appreciation by
explaining the writing process and the ideas that generate the songs. For
sure, he brings both a clarity and comprehension to the music which is rare,
and when he choses to play a cover, he has a refreshing take upon the song.
You only have to hear “Dear John” to realise Status Quo were not 100% correct
in their version!!! |
|
Later in
the year, he is again nominated in various categories at the UK Country Music
Radio Annual Awards. Being no stranger to success at these prestigious
awards, his impact is remarkable that he has already been the winner of the
Male Artist of the Year twice, in 2022 and again last year. He is nominated
in three categories – Best Artist, Best Male Artist and Best Song. For
those who know Dave and those who heard him last time, if you want to support
and vote for him in any or, we hope, all three categories you can access the
voting page by activating this link <<CLICK
HERE>> So after 30 years
of gigging, writing and entrancing audiences across the UK and the USA Dave
has finally become the overnight success he so richly deserves. Many thanks to Dave for
such a superb Concert. We are looking forward to the new album, that he
previewed so well during the Concert. |
|
Bill Tarran
provided the opening support and gave a fine selection of songs. Bill has an
enormous musical knowledge and his ability to move between both genres and
generations opened the evening with a great set of acoustic music that really
set the scene for the evening. |
|
Thanks must be
given to the Staff at the SMAC for their help and assistance in getting
everyone seated and kept comfortably supplied with sufficient liquid
refreshments throughout the evening, but extra special thanks must go to
Jayden, the Sound Man Extraordinary whose gentle persuasion of the sound
system is so masterful. |
THURSDAY 17th APRIL 2025
SIX ACTS – FOUR SONGS
|
Hello Acoustic
Clubbers What a terrific
evening we had last time with a superb line up of six terrific acts It was an
absolute pleasure to welcome hard working musicians and they always, new to
us or regular performers back to our stage. |
||
|
riverrats Opening the evening
The riverrats, gave us a superb set of original stomping, hard hitting music.
Their original, contemporary, unfussy
and superb music is doing exactly what they set out to achieve. Their unembellished
sound relies on originality and ability. To be honest they have lots and lots
of both and really gave us a start to remember!!! |
|
|
|
|
Colin Frid Colin always ensures
we do not go away empty handed as he will always pull a great song out of his
memory. As a character Colin is unmatched. He is a big personality and will
always entertain and amuse in equal measure. Another cracking set from him
complete with strange tunings and glorious original music. |
|
|
Arcadia Arcadia are Sue
Johnson and Richard Balarkas. AS a duo they made
their debut last time but it was not their first appearance at the club.
Being part of the wonderful Shorelines. Sue sings and Richard plays the
guitar and together they took us back to a less complicated era where fine
songs and close harmony ruled the stage. We had an unexpected journey back to a more
gentler time. |
|
|
|
|
Brian Harvey &
Mark Gamon It was
an absolute delight to welcome back Brian and Mark to the Acoustic Club. Mark
has largely recovered from his leg injury, but in the meantime Brian has been
busy writing new music. Two guitars and two clear voices they gave us a
belting set of music that was typically Brian and Mark. |
|
|
Peter Crossley. Peter
shows constantly why he is so important to local music. He has a vast store
of personalised cover as well as his highly original and delightful original
work. A proud Yorkshireman and troubadour of the old school who is happy
entertaining us with his terrific songs, but his musical influences colour
his music. Always the man to deliver a cracking set of music and melody his
set was a triumph. |
|
|
|
|
Rhys Wilson Closing
the evening, Rhys is an unapologetic fan of the late and much missed musical
icon Gordon Lightfoot. As it happens it was exactly a year since we lost this
iconic singer songwriter and as a tribute to his memory Rhys chose three of
the very best from the Lightfoot song book and his own personal tribute to
him “The Day Gord Died”. A fine set and a glorious tribute to a man who held
the flag of singer songwriters for so many years. |
|
|
We must also offer
grateful thanks to Seb for his
great work on the mixing desk ensuring all players had the very best of sound
as well all the Staff and Volunteers who make sure the SMAC is a welcoming
and friendly environment. |
||
THURSDAY 17th APRIL 2025
DOUBLE HEADLINE SHOWCASE
JESS BRETT and ELLIOT PORTER
|
Hello Acoustic
Clubbers What a terrific
evening we had last time with a superb Double Headline Showcase featuring
Jess Brett and Elliot Porter. It was an absolute pleasure to welcome two of
the hardest working musicians on the circuit with both not only performing at
so many venues but organising varied music nights that enrich the local
community. |
||
|
JESS BRETT Jess is
not only a long term friend of the Acoustic Club, she also has the
distinction of running the Club for several years after Keef and Annie
retired from the organisational role, so it is always a real pleasure to
welcome her back to the Acoustic Club. |
||
|
|
||
|
Jess proved
yet again what a brilliant all around musician she is. Her song writing has
developed from the very good to the compelling. She performs with a
confidence and talent that has matured over the years but retains that
freshness that makes her performances of both her own compositions but also
the occasional cover that bears her distinctive mark. Her set passed so
quickly it appeared to be over just after it had started, which is the mark
of a compelling performer. Thanks Jess, just brilliant. |
||
|
ELLIOT PORTER Over the
years Elliot performed probably more than any other artist at the Acoustic
Club. The reason for this was proven so clearly last time, he is very, very
good. He is constantly developing his talent, re-inventing himself over the
years from a young and burgeoning talent to established professional musician
with a song or tune for any occasion. |
||
|
|
||
|
We were
delighted that he was joined by his partner Jess supplying some wonderful
harmonies which fitted Eli’s songs so beautifully. Elliot
combined not only the well worn musical profile of
singer/songwriter/guitarist with his other persona as the piano playing
singer who can fit into almost any situation where great music is required.
Elliot is an all-around musical phenomenon and will always entrance and
entertain in equal measure. |
||
|
Support was
provided by Bill Tarran Host and M/C, Emilia
Payne Smith, India Purton (Accompanied by Stuart Purton), John & Danny
McCarthy, William Chandler and Jasper Bokay |
||
|
We must also offer
grateful thanks to Ali for his
great work on the mixing desk ensuring all players had the very best of sound
as well all the Staff and Volunteers who make sure the SMAC is a welcoming
and friendly environment. |
||
|
THURSDAY 3rd APRIL
2025 6 ACTS – 4 SONGS Hello Acoustic
Clubbers A great evening of
live music was promised last time, and did those 6 acts deliver! When you
have 9 individual musicians who combine into 6 acts what more can you ask
for? Each act has their own place in music and demonstrated their
musicianship and ability to entertain as part of a wonderful evening |
|
|
|
|
D n A D n A are a duo of
Ally Cosser and Dave Oxley. Both and Ali and Dave come from different musical
backgrounds but coalesce into a musical partnership that is a showcase for
their talents in so many areas. They are developing their own songs and have
some wonderful harmonies that engage and entrance in equal measure. They
treated us to some wonderful songs, both old and new with such verve and
panache their set was a delight. |
|
|
COLIN FRID Colin has been part
of the fixtures and fittings of the local music scene for quite a long time
and there is a very good reason for this. He is just downright good at what
he does. Just him, his astounding voice and his Martin Guitar are all he
needs to produce wonderful music. It matters not what songs he chooses to
share, they are all individual and delivered in his inimitable style. Long
may he continue to entertain us in such glorious style. |
|
|
|
|
VIC LENNARD Vic is always a
welcome performer at the Acoustic Club and his visit to us last time only
enhanced his reputation. Vic has an enviable back catalogue of original songs
as well as the ability to craft new versions of standards and well known
songs. He sings and writes about subjects that matter to him and his songs
are both lyrical and hard hitting at the same time. Great to see you again
Vic and look forward to seeing you soon. |
|
|
JAMES FRID James has often
appeared as the Acoustic Club as part of One after 909 with his father Colin.
This was the first time we have seen and heard James on his own armed only
with ana acoustic guitar and his voice. What was not evident was just how a
great songwriter he is. His songs reflect his personality and are embellished
by his stunning guitar work and cultured vocals. Just a fantastic debut. |
|
|
|
|
CUT THE MUSTARD Cut The Mustard
remain the “Go to duo” for goodtime, ragtime blues and swing. The reason they
are the Go to Duo is because they are at the very top of the musical tree.
They are original orientated but can slip into songs from the past with an
ease that is so slick in its execution that is can only be classed as
enviable. As ever a master class of guitar, vocal harmonies and soulful harp
embellish their performance. |
|
|
KAREN MACWHINNIE
& FRIENDS AMERICAN TRIO Karen Macwhinnie
combining with Matt Kelly and Gary Wolley is a musical masterstroke! They
come from three distinct roots but when they get together to play some real
Americana they are outstanding. No one can doubt the musical pedigree of
Kelly and Wooley as both are masters of their instruments but when Karen’s
outstanding vocals tinged with her Scottish brogue soar above the
accompaniment and Matt and Gary swing in with their excellent harmonies and
backing vocals a musical authenticity takes place. Just a wonderful set
performed brilliantly by three musicians who love the songs they play. Many
thanks |
|
|
|
We must also offer
grateful thanks to Ali for
his great work on the mixing desk ensuring all players had the very best of
sound as well all the Staff and Volunteers who make sure the SMAC is a
welcoming and friendly environment. |
|
Featuring THE BROWNS and LILY MARTIN |
|
A Double Headline
Showcase was on offer last time and probably was the widest gap in the
spectre of music that you could possibly imagine featuring Lily Martin
supported by Paul Finney and The Browns. |
|
THE BROWNS The Browns are one
of the most distinguished duos playing these days. They are
singer/songwriters known for their rich and expressive blend of voices in
harmony. They have performed
at festivals and folk club venues across East Anglia and beyond. Last time they gave
us a very detailed look at the sheer pleasure of close harmony traditional
folk songs with a level of performance that would be very hard to better.
|
|
As well as playing
music from the rapidly expanding list of their own songs, The Browns brought
their unique arrangements and harmonies to contemporary and traditional folk
songs. With just two
voices and one guitar, they delivered the unique musicality that they have
developed which is an exceptional sound allowing their distinctive vocals to
take centre stage and shine. An absolute
treasure of a set. Many thanks from everyone. LILY MARTIN Absent without
Leave from the Acoustic Club for some time so we were delighted to the
welcome return of Lily to the Acoustic Club. She has a rapidly developing superbly
vocal delivery with a voice not dissimilar to Amy Winehouse. |
|
|
|
Lily has many
strings to her bow and that is not limited to a great stage presence, a voice
that can flip between haunting to soulful blues and all the way to her own
fantastic songs which she has co written with keyboard accompanist Paul
Finney on keyboard. You cannot
underestimate the level of talent Lily has and with Paul, the depth and sheer
quality of her original material is astounding. |
|
Our supporting players rose wonderfully to the occasion
with sets from Host and MC Bill Tarran, Richard Holder, Riverrats (Alex
& Jon), Emily Piercy accompanied by Bill Tarran and Conor Andrews. We must also offer grateful thanks to Ali for his great work on the
mixing desk ensuring all players had the very best of sound as well all the
Staff and Volunteers who make sure the SMAC is a welcoming and friendly
environment. |
Thursday 6th March
6 Acts with 4 Songs each
LIVE AT THE BELGIAN BREWER
|
Hello Acoustic
Clubbers Last time we were
back at the Belgian Brewer for a fabulous night of music when we returned
with 6 Acts; all ready, willing and able to entertain and enthuse with as
varied a range of music you could ever hope for. |
||
|
We were delighted
to welcome The String Section, Mike Johnson, Mike Excel, Ray Hollingsworth
and Shouts at Clouds and Pat Crilly and Paul Hilder. |
||
|
|
THE STRING SECTION The String Section
play fiddle, mandolin and guitar and deliver fine vocals. They thoroughly
entertained us with a rare combination of musicianship, talent and a
repertoire not often heard. In simple terms their music might be considered
backwoods American, but there is far more depth and meaning to it. The big
question to define their style; is it bluegrass, is it country, is it
Kentucky Mountain music? I am not certain it
is can be adequately classified, but it was perfectly executed and really
well appreciated. |
|
|
SHOUTS AT CLOUDS (Pete Croft) Shouts at Clouds is
a solo project focusing on original music and slightly non-standard covers.
Light-hearted serious uplifting dark original songs (& covers). Rocky
Folky? Punky Acoustic? Who knows. Pete is an old
friend of the club’s and it is clear he now spends considerable time and
effort on his band, but that does not matter a bit. His songs are spikey,
hard hitting and just plain good. He really comes to life when on his own,
with just him, his guitar and his songs and last time was no different. |
|
|
|
|
MIKE EXCELL A welcome return to
the club. Mike is a first rate singer and songwriter as well as an
exceptional guitarist His writing is
complex and poetic. He produces a wonderful sound that is not lost amongst
the glorious words and as ever he delivers his superb songs with a smile on
his face, joy in his heart and at time his tongue very firmly in his cheek!. The songs are as
varied as his life experience as well as of the news in general. A fantastic
set that made everyone sit up and take notice! |
|
|
MIKE JOHNSON Mike is better
known as the front man of the soft rock band JONO but as a solo performer he
is able to explore other genres and writers. He is a meticulous
performer with great vocals and a fine guitarist he gave us an eclectic range
of covers with his unique stamp on them. Great versions of songs from the
rock era of the 1980’s and 90’s that you thought you knew and delivered
sinerely. |
|
|
|
|
RAY HOLLINGWORTH A fine all round
entertainer who is on a continuing journey with his guitar and vocals, Ray
has spent a distinguished career perfecting his talent and after a brief
outing a little while ago, we were eager to hear an expanded set. Ray does
not do disappointment. Top full with some remarkable songs, especially Rory
Gallagher and George Harrison. What more can you ask for? |
|
|
PAT CRILLY and PAUL
HILDER We are delighted to
welcome back Hertfords Mr Music accompanied by his long term sparring partner
and blues guitar legend Paul Hilder. If It is in Hertford and has music, it
is a safe bet that Pat is somewhere either on stage or in the background. As
being arguably the hardest working and most popular performers around the
area Pat often teams up with other players and tonight his foil was Paul
Hilder. His catalogue of remarkable songs as well as the stories that support
them are expanded by the sheer talent Paul can demonstrate which give Pats
songs a different dimension. Just a cracking set. Enough said. |
|
|
|
Many thanks to BILL
TARRAN for M/C and running the sound desk and to Nic and his staff at the
Belgian Brewer for such a fantastic setting for a great night of music |
|
|
Thursday 6th February
2025 THE TOM BRAGGINS TRIO |
||||
|
Hello Acoustic Clubbers What a performance! Every time we plan a Concert
Evening, our players seem to rise to the occasion and produce outstanding
music all-around. Last time we had a wonderful selection of varied and
brilliantly performed music across the genres and to finish the evening on a
wonderful high point, the Tom Braggins Trio. |
||||
|
|
||||
|
It is about as difficult as knitting yoghurt as it is
to define what genre the Trio actually falls into. Funk Rock? Not completely.
Jazz Funk? Perhaps. Contemporary Jazz Rock? Not sure. The truth is that it is
a task that should not be attempted simply because the music they produce is
unique. It is original, well rehearsed and perfectly delivered with that air
of improvisation that delights audiences. They have a musical connection that
borne of long association and mutual respect. Once you have heard their
music, you are hooked. An hour long set is never enough, but at the end of
their inevitable encore the audience left with that sense of fulfilment that
the pre-gig hype had promised. Many thanks to Tom, Phil and Chris for a
perfectly executed and professionally delivered hour of just superb music. Geoff promised and the guys agreed – THEY WILL BE
BACK!! Many thanks to our supporting players. Stuart
Nicholson and Dan Titus are known quantities musically and gave us
great support (Note to Dan – your song writing has definitely moved from good
towards remarkable). We were also delighted to welcome two new players Mia
Automata and Godspeed Jones who collaborated brilliantly together
with wonderful original music. |
||||
|
Grateful thanks goes
to Charlie for his great work on the mixing desk ensuring all players
had the very best of sound as well all the Staff and Volunteers who make sure
the SMAC is a welcoming and friendly environment. |
|
Hello Acoustic Clubbers There was some sort of bug going around last week that
threw plans for the evening into a bit of disarray for a while. But Geoff,
unflappable as ever, quickly sorted matters to ensure a cracking evening of
music. We hope that all the players who were struck down with the bug get
well soon and we look forward to another night with you. With a quick couple of calls we went from the 6 acts to
5 acts but with the added bonus of 5 songs from each. Many thanks to our
performers who really made the evening a superb night out. |
|
|
Pat Crilly & Greg Camburn Whatever can be said about this magnificent duo has
probably already been said. They are a perfect collaboration of musical
talent. Whether they are performing Pat’s original songs or the very
occasional and carefully selected cover or songs from yesteryear, they have a
unique and compelling style and sound.
Greg’s counterpoint accompaniment on sax or whistle to Pat’s distinct
vocals and guitar work is always a complete performance. As ever they
delivered a set that raises the heart and lifts the soul. |
|
|
|
Why Not Why Not are an accomplished duo from Hertford who have
been performing for many years in various groups and combos. They have
recently released a belting album which really lives up to expectations. Sue
and Verna always have something to say and perform in an unassuming and
compelling style that is very definitely their own. |
|
Mike Johnson Mike Johnson has a tremendous history of musical
accomplishment. He is well known as the front man of the soft rock band JONO
but as a solo performer he is able to explore other genres and writers. A
meticulous performer mike has the vocal range for almost any song but he is
very selective in his solo performances choosing often little known
songs from great sources and giving them the MJ once over. As ever a delightful set |
|
|
|
Clark and Johnson Tony and Karen are staples of the Stortford Music
Scene. With the widest repertoire and a mastery of their craft they are
always well received by any audience. Karen’s vocals are clear and precise
and Tony’s guitar and bouzouki backing is so well attuned to Karens vocals it
is always a delight to hear them. They combine so many styles and genres you are never
sure what will come next, but you know it will be worthwhile and impeccably
delivered. |
|
The Paul Booth Trio This trio is the natural extension of Pauls musical
journey. Over the years Paul has collaborated with others but recently his
trio including Si on bass and Verna as backing vocals and harmonies is at a
new and brilliant level. We have been delighted to welcome the Trio on a
couple of occasions previously and their development as the expand their
music is superb. This time they included two new songs from Paul and it is
always a delight to hear new original music so masterfully delivered. |
|
|
Grateful thanks go to
Greg who acted as M/C with his usual panache and thanks are due to the staff
at the South Mill Arts Centre for their great work on the mixing desk
ensuring all players had the very best of sound as well as making sure the
SMAC is a welcoming and friendly environment. |
9th
January 2025
RUNAWAY
JUKEBOX
|
Last time at the
Acoustic Club we were delighted to open the new year at with Runaway Jukebox
who entranced the full house audience. |
|
|
|
Runaway
Jukebox Runaway Jukebox are a
band who mix popular classics with the self-penned original songs. They are
is a great example of what can be achieved if three people put their mind to
providing top quality entertainment in the form of non-stop music. They are a
stunning trio. Stubbsy's driving guitar and James's jangling electro-acoustic
sit either side of Andrew's pulsing percussion, often with full-on three-part
vocal harmonies, which makes up the unique Runaway Jukebox sound. They created
such a great feeling around the large audience and induced foot tapping with
their smile inducing music. They are a great Good Time Band and let us hope
we see them again soon. |
|
Many thanks to
everyone who supported us with support spots. It is always a please to
welcome and listen to Greg Camburn - Host and M/C, Richard Holder, The Maystones, Mike
Johnson and Colin Frid. |
|
Many thanks are due to
the staff at the South Mill Arts Centre for their great work on the mixing
desk ensuring all players had the very best of sound as well as making sure
the SMAC is a welcoming and friendly environment. |
